Hello SkippySky User, I need help - but my wife could have told you that... ;-) Every day of the year I download the Global Forecast System (GFS) Numerical Weather Model data from the USA four times every day - every 6 hours! My SkippySky software generates about 36,000 PNG files per day, which all have to be uploaded to the server. More if I've put up special maps for Eclipses, Star Parties or IOTA Occultation events. All of which requires a fairly hefty broadband plan to make it happen in a timely manner. What does it actually cost me? To be honest ,I'm not too sure. And I try not to let my Good Wife have any idea... $100p.m for cable internet plan. Power for a hefty 6 core PC running 24/7/365 Business class Website hosting Domain name registration Then there are the intangible hours of my time maintaining, changing and modifying the site to cope with short term requests for special maps, e.g. for IOTA occultation expeditions, Solar eclipses & star parties OK, my time is my voluntary donation to the Community and Science. It would be nice though to break even, cost-wise. What can I say? If you're a frequent, regular user of SkippySky, it would be nice to receive a contribution towards costs, maintenance and upgrade of the service. If you click on SkippySky once a week, would you miss $10 as a donation? If you click on SkippySky every day, would you serously miss $50 as a once off donation? If you display SkippySky maps on your own website, or "iframe" SkippySky in its entirety to your website, as some do, then you might like to consider a larger amount because you obviously rate SkippySky highly, and you should probably be feeling guilty if you're not offering some support. It will help you sleep better! These are not sums of money that will make me rich. A new car or a holiday in Rio will not be the end result of your donation... Donations can of course be made via the PAYPAL button on the banner of every page of the SkippySky website. Oh, and let me make it quite clear that SkippySky is NOT a registered "charity" in terms of claiming a tax deduction for your donation. It's just me and my PC in my very average suburban home. So please do not upset your local tax man by claiming that your donation is in some way tax exempt. Lastly, the banner "adverts/logos" that appear at the top of every page do NOT mean those august companies are paying money into my pocket. Or in any other way supporting SkippySky. My kid's High School has it's own Observatory, which I run for the School, and where I mentor a group of Gifted & talented students in astronomy. See http://www.theheights.sa.edu.au/observatory.html Companies that donate equipment to The Heights Observatory get their logo and a link to their website on SkippySky as a quid pro quo arrangement. No money changes hands, and definitely neither money nor equipment ends up in my pockets. On behalf of The Heights Observatory, my thanks go out to Gerd Neumann of Astronomik in Germany, and Don Whiteman, of Bintel in Sydney, Australia, for their support of our future Astronomers. And absolutely lastly, a plug for my align and stacking software called SkippyStak :- www.skippystak.com.au Kind regards, Andrew Cool Adelaide, South Australia www.skippysky.com.au contact@skippysky.com.au
